lorekai: The Convoluted Characters of Kingdom Hearts.

This week, as my life still revolves around Kingdom Hearts, and after a conversation with marsy, in which we determined that there are very few characters originating from Kingdom Hearts, that are not in some way, shape, or form, arguably another character in the series, due to how connected they are, be it through possession or otherwise, I’ll be trying my best to explain, simply, the connections between these characters. Please be aware this will contain spoilers, and also before I begin, as far as I can determine, throughout the seven games in the series, there are only five named characters who are not in anyway connected, through convolution, to another character.

Characters connected to Sora:

Roxas is Sora’s Nobody, and Xion is his clone. Ventus’ heart is inside Sora, which is why Roxas looks like him, it is also very implied that Roxas has Ventus’ heart. Vanitus is the darkness from Ventus’ heart made manifest, and he looks like Sora due to an earlier connection between Ventus and Sora’s hearts. Naminé is also arguably Sora, as she was created by Kairi’s heart leaving Sora’s body.

Characters connected to Xehanort:

Master Xehanort

Young Xehanort

Xehanort (Ansem the Wise’s Apprentice)

Ansem, Seeker of Darkness

Master Xehanort is the original Xehanort, who possesses Terra, they then lose their memories and become the apprentice Xehanort. Upon regaining his memories as Master Xehanort, he split himself into a Heartless, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, and Nobody, Xemnas. Ansem, SoD, then travels back in time and grants the power of time-travel to a younger version of Master Xehanort, who becomes known Young Xehanort. Ansem, SoD, also later possesses Riku, and while he is subdued, it meant that Riku temporarily took the form of Ansem, SoD, after using the powers of darkness. Xigbar and Saïx are both members of the true Organisation XIII, meaning that are vessels for Xehanort, and possess a fragment of his heart.

Nobodies and their Somebodies:

Xemnas/Ansem (SoD)

Aside from those with other connections, mentioned previously, these are fairly simple, as they are just alternative versions of each other, depending on whether they have their heart or not, though some have differing personalities. Those with ??? are characters whose somebody is not known at this point in time, and while it is unknown whether they will be introduced or not I am hesitant to declare them as having no connections.

Other connections of note:

Riku Replica: Riku’s clone, only present in Chain of Memories.

Ansem the Wise: Has his identity stolen by Xehanort, assumes the identity DiZ, later returns to being Ansem.

Xion: Looks like Kairi as she was Sora’s strongest memory.

Characters without Connections:

Thanks for reading, this turned out longer than expected, Kingdom Hearts is even more convoluted than I assumed, and I fear it’s only going to get more so, since time travel has become a thing, though I’m still looking forward to Kingdom Hearts III, hopefully it will get a release date soon. Anyway thanks once again for reading, and I hope this made some sense.

lorekai: Tales of Hearts R First Impressions.

Another first impressions post this week, this time it’s of Tales of Hearts R, the recently released Vita remake of the original DS’s Tales of Hearts. Please be aware there will be some spoilers for the first hour of the game.

Ancient Prophecy thing, check.

Girl with mysterious power, check, being chased by a mysterious bad, check.

Naive main character who has never been out of his home town, check.

Tragic death of main character’s elder mentor/family member, check, said person has a mysterious connect to mysterious bad, check.

Collection quest that will force party to travel around the world, check.

Someone obviously wasn’t trying very hard when coming up with the beginning for this game, as it’s more than a little cliché, and while I have full faith that it will find a way to subvert the expected, as most Tales of games do, it was a little disappointing to have such a predictable beginning to a game I’ve been looking forward to for a little while now.

Random Encounters! How very unexpected! I don’t have a problem with them, I just did not expect them at all, especially in a recent Tales of game, aside from that I don’t really have much to say about the gameplay so far, combat seems like the standard variation on a similar theme, which is good, it’s fun and it works, and the abilities system seems both promising, and lacking in convolution, which is nice.

I’ll admit graphically this game was a very pleasant surprise, I did not expect the remake of a DS game to be so pretty. The environments are pretty, it runs smoothly, and it makes good use of colours so the characters stand out, even if the character designs themselves don’t seem that impressive. The only thing that bothers me so far, is that while some of the animated cutscenes fit the Vita screen, some of them are square, and the is a discrepancy in quality between them. My suspicion is that this is due to it being a remake, and those in charge of the remake not bothering to do anything about the cutscenes they used from the DS version.

Soundtrack doesn’t seem particularly standout so far, there is nothing to complain about, but there is nothing of note either. Oddly enough, sound-wise,  we get the Japanese voices, but not the opening song, which is probably due to this being a low budget release, which is a little bit disappointing, especially as there seem to be some minor timing issues between the text boxes and the characters speaking, and also because I tend to like the proper opening songs.

That’s all, thank for reading. My time this week will be devoted to exam revision and going “Ahhh!”, and then after that it’s Pokémon, so don’t when I’ll be able to review this properly, hopefully soon though.

Friday Free-for-all: All clothing is aliens

By the way: spoilers.

Dear internet,

Today I learned many interesting things:

All problems can be solved by going super saiyan.

Being a nudist is the ethical choice. Especially around schoolchildren

You can fall from orbit and survive, but only if your sister tries to catch you.

When you’re on a date with another girl and you see your sister, approach by synchronised dancing is the only option.

There apparently is such a thing as too much tea. (HERESY)

marsy reports that she has the Horsehead Nebula on her inner thigh. Her clothes ARE SPACE.

The stars aligned, and EbolaBooze managed to get pictures. Everybody else got mosquito bites.

Croquettes fix everything. Especially cheesy ones filled with minced, unidentifiable things.

Gamagoori x Mako is so canon. If you don’t ship it, you can’t have seen the show.

Victory tea, but we didn’t see that happen.

Senketsu is the most moe.

Needed more dance party. Naked dance party.

Equal opportunity nudity is the best nudity.

More lens flare than the Star Trek reboot. IT WAS NEEDED.

In conclusion:

Kill la Kill saved anime.

We are still riding the high.
